Avoiding Gum Disease

Avoiding Gum Disease At Red Maple Dental, we are committed to helping our patients improve their oral health. Gum disease remains one of the most common dental concerns that patients face. However, gum disease is preventable with proper oral hygiene and preventive dental care. In this post, we will highly simple ways to improve your gum health.

Gum Disease Prevention Tips

  • Visit the dentist twice a year for biannual dental exams. Dr. Shawna Hoffert suggests that patients schedule at least two preventive dental exams a year. If you are in poor oral health, Dr. Hoffert may suggest three visits to our Asheville dental office. During your preventive care exam, Dr. Hoffert will screen your teeth and gums for signs of complex dental issues. Patients will also receive a professional tooth cleaning to remove plaque and tartar build-up from the teeth. Professional dental cleanings remove plaque that regular brushing and flossing cannot reach.
  • Practice a proper oral hygiene routine. Ideally, patients should brush, floss, and rinse their teeth at least twice a day to remove bacteria and debris. Developing and maintaining your oral hygiene routine can help you improve your oral health.
  • Stay away from smoking and tobacco use. Smoking can increase your risk of developing gum disease. Studies have also proven that smokers have a higher chance of developing oral cancer than non-smokers. Take charge of your oral and overall health, and consider quitting.
  • Eat a well-balanced diet. Eating a well-balanced diet can help your teeth, and gums get the nutrients they need to stay healthy. Patients may also want to limit the number of sugary beverages and foods they consume.
