Scroll through social media or flip through a magazine, and you’ll see them everywhere: impossibly white, perfectly straight, mirror-image smiles. It’s easy to look at those photos and think, “I want that.” And why wouldn’t you? A bright, confident smile can change how you feel about yourself.

But what works for a celebrity on a red carpet isn’t always the right choice for you. Porcelain veneers are an incredible tool, but they aren’t magic. And they definitely aren’t for everyone. Let’s talk about what porcelain veneers can actually do and where they fall short.

What Porcelain Veneers Can and Can't Fix in Asheville, NC

What Veneers Can Fix

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of your teeth. At Red Maple Dental, we use porcelain veneers because they reflect light like natural enamel and resist staining better than other materials.

Veneers are excellent at addressing:

They Don’t Fix Underlying Problems

Veneers are cosmetic. If you have active tooth decay, gum disease, or a bite that’s off, those issues need to be treated first. Placing veneers over an unhealthy foundation is like painting over rust. It looks nice for a minute, but the problem underneath only gets worse.

They Require Removing Healthy Enamel

This is the part that surprises a lot of people. To place a veneer, we remove a thin layer of enamel from the front of your tooth, about the thickness of a contact lens. This is permanent. Your teeth will always need that coverage once the enamel is gone. That means you’re committing to veneers or crowns for the rest of your life.

They Are Not for Heavy Grinders

If you grind or clench your teeth at night, veneers are at high risk for chipping or cracking. That excessive pressure puts too much stress on the restorations, and they simply won’t last. We’ll always ask about your grinding habits during a consultation because we don’t want you to invest in something that could fail prematurely.

They Won’t Make You Look Like a Different Person

A good cosmetic dentist isn’t trying to create a “one-size-fits-all” smile. The goal is to enhance what you already have. Veneers should be shaped and shaded to complement your face, your skin tone, and your personality. The highest compliment a veneer can receive isn’t “nice veneers”; it’s “you have beautiful teeth.”

Improve Your Smile Today

Veneers are a transformative option for the right patient. They can boost your confidence and give you a smile you’re proud to show off. But they’re also a significant, irreversible commitment.

At Red Maple Dental, Dr. Hoffert doesn’t believe in rushing into treatment. She’ll take the time to understand your goals, examine your dental health, and walk you through every option, including alternatives like bonding or teeth whitening. If veneers are right for you, we’ll design them to look like they belong to you. If they aren’t, we’ll tell you that too.
